What is the best free AI photo editor for desktop?

ZippyCraft Team
Photographer editing raw photos on a laptop with a before and after split, a free AI photo editor for desktop

The best free AI photo editor for desktop depends on what "free" means to you. As of November 2026, ZippyCraft is our pick: the full app with 100 free edits that never expire, AI included, no API keys. darktable and GIMP are free forever but need more setup. Lightroom and Luminar are 7-day trials.

Key takeaways

  • "Free" ranges from free software with no limit (darktable, GIMP) to a 7-day trial (Lightroom, Luminar).
  • ZippyCraft gives you the full app and 100 free edits with no expiry. That is a set amount, not unlimited.
  • darktable 5.6 added optional local AI tools (mask, denoise, upscale), not plain-language editing.
  • Photopea is free but runs in a browser, so it is not a desktop app.
  • Manual editing and replays in ZippyCraft never use up your edits.

What does "free" actually mean for a photo editor?

It can mean four different things, and mixing them up is how people end up with a surprise bill.

  • Free software: no price, no time limit, no edit limit. darktable and GIMP are in this group.
  • Free with a fixed allowance: the app is free, and the AI has a set number of edits. ZippyCraft is here.
  • Free trial: a short test period, then you pay. Lightroom and Luminar both offer 7 days.
  • Free in a browser: no install, but not a desktop app. Photopea is the example.

Check which one you are getting before you invest hours learning an app.

Which free AI photo editors work on a desktop?

Five options are worth a look. Here is the short version, with the details below. Prices and terms are from each company's own pages as of November 2026 and can change.

Why is ZippyCraft our pick?

Of the tools we compared, it is the one that gives you the whole product with the AI already working: no time limit, no setup and no API key.

ZippyCraft is a desktop AI photo editor for Mac (Apple silicon and Intel) and Windows 10/11 64-bit. You tell the AI what you want, like "brighter and warmer" or "cull the blurry shots", and it edits each photo with real sliders. You can see and change everything it did. Your originals stay untouched.

Here is what the free offer covers, and what it does not:

  • 100 free edits, no expiry. One edit covers one photo.
  • The full app, no feature limits. The free offer is not a cut-down version.
  • AI included. No API keys, no AI accounts, nothing to set up.
  • Manual editing and replays don't use edits. Use the sliders as much as you like.

The honest part: 100 is a set amount. If you send the AI to edit 100 photos, your free edits are used. Plan for that, and spend them where the AI saves you the most time, like a first pass on a whole folder.

Because the AI uses the same sliders you do, nothing is a black box. It checks its own result, fixes colour casts, and explains every step. For a closer look at how that works, read How do I edit photos by just telling the AI what I want?.

Download free to try it on a real shoot. You can also see more at zippycraft.net.

Where ZippyCraft is not the right fit

  • It is desktop only. There is no phone or web version.
  • AI editing needs an internet connection. Manual editing and replaying past AI edits work offline.
  • Fill is non-generative. If you need generative image creation, compositing or design work, look elsewhere.
  • Some compressed raw variants are not supported yet.
  • The Windows installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows may show a SmartScreen warning. Click "More info", then "Run anyway".

Is darktable a good free AI photo editor?

Yes, if you want a free raw editor that stays free and you don't mind some setup. darktable is released under the GPL 3.0, and its site lists no price.

In June 2026, darktable 5.6 added an optional AI subsystem with two main tools:

  • AI object mask: click an object and it becomes an editable mask.
  • Neural restore: raw denoise, denoise and upscale. The result is saved as a new image.

AI models are off by default and are downloaded only when you ask for them in preferences. They run locally, and darktable says nothing leaves your machine. That is a real privacy advantage over cloud AI.

The catches: the AI features are tools you operate yourself, not an assistant that edits from a description. Official builds include the subsystem, but the Flatpak release did not include AI features as of September 2026. And there are no official releases for Intel Macs, only Apple silicon (macOS 13.5 and later) and Windows.

Does GIMP have free AI features?

GIMP's official About page doesn't mention any built-in AI features. GIMP is free software under the GNU GPL, and the current version is 3.2.6 (released 10 September 2026). It runs on Linux, macOS and Windows.

Any AI would come from third-party plugins. One example is withoutBG, an open-source background-removal project with a GIMP 3 plugin. According to its author's post on a community forum (not an independent review), it runs locally through a local API, either with a macOS app or a Docker image, and the lightest Docker image is about 927 MB.

GIMP is a strong retouching and compositing tool. But if "AI" means one-click edits across a shoot, you will be assembling the pieces yourself.

Is Adobe Lightroom free?

Not on desktop. Adobe offers a 7-day free trial for Lightroom on macOS, iPadOS and Windows, then it is paid. As of November 2026, Lightroom costs US$11.99 a month on the annual plan billed monthly. Prices can change.

Its AI tools include Generative Remove, AI masking (Select Subject, Sky and Background) and Super Resolution. Generative credits are capped at 250 a month on the Lightroom plan.

Adobe also lists a free Lightroom mobile app for iOS and Android, with premium features as an upgrade. That is a phone app, so it falls outside this list.

Is Luminar free to try?

For 7 days. Skylum's trial page says you get access to all features for that week. Check the trial terms on the page before you start.

Luminar is an AI-heavy desktop editor for Mac and Windows. Its tools include an AI Assistant that applies edits from a text description, GenErase, GenSwap, Noiseless and Upscale. After the trial, it is sold as a one-time licence, so check Skylum's current licence options and prices before buying.

What about Photopea?

Photopea is free and works in a browser, so it isn't a desktop app. Its own page says it can work offline, and its site lists AI features like one-click background removal and replacing part of an image from a text description.

It is a good pick for quick layer-based edits without installing anything. For raw photos and big shoots, a desktop library is a better fit.

Which one should you choose?

Match the tool to the job:

  1. You have a big shoot and want the AI to do the first pass: ZippyCraft. Use your 100 free edits on a real folder.
  2. You want free forever, with local AI: darktable. Expect to learn the app and enable the AI yourself.
  3. You need pixel-level retouching and compositing: GIMP, with a plugin if you want AI.
  4. You want to test a polished AI suite for a week: Lightroom or Luminar. Set a reminder before the trial ends.
  5. You need a quick browser edit: Photopea.
